Cambodia and Laos Senate Discuss Bilateral Objectives

Phnom Penh: National Assembly President, Heng Samrin, has held talks with the new president of the Laos National Assembly, Dr. Xaysomphone Phomvihane. The online meeting focused on further strengthening ties between the two parliaments to serve the interests of the Cambodian and Lao peoples, most especially in the light of Covid-19.

The two men have vowed to continue implementing their Memorandum of Understanding between the two parliaments that was signed in 2019, aimed at promoting regular exchanges at all levels. In addition, the two parliamentary leaders welcomed a recent agreement to raise bilateral relations to the level of a comprehensive and long-term strategic partnership.

Heng Samrin took the opportunity to inform Dr. Xaysomphone about Cambodia’s efforts to contain Covid-19, including vaccinations for adults and children aged 12 to 17. He says the $719-million in funds allocated by the Royal Government in response to the pandemic could yet rise to more than $1.45-billion.

Heng Samrin says the Cambodian economy was projected to expand by 4.8% next year, although growth this year could fall from an initial forecast of 4% to 2.4% due to the 20 February Community Transmission Event and increased cases of the Delta variant. In turn, Dr. Xaysomphone said Laos now also faced a second wave. He says the Lao people have been united in fighting the pandemic, striving to improve people’s livelihoods and the economy.
